This is the Best Wildlife Photo Safari near Johannesburg. With less than a 2-hour drive, you enter true African wilderness within a blink of an eye. And whether you’re looking for a wildlife photo safari experience near Johannesburg, or just want to travel to Africa for the first time, this is the perfect Photo Safari for you. We spend 5 days near Johannesburg in the untouched Big 5 area, called Dinokeng Game Reserve. On this Safari you could see all members of the Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino), and multiple other Mammal species, as well as everything in between. What’s more, Dinokeng doesn’t dehorn their Rhino, that in itself is attractive enough to ensure you get the best Safari experience possible. Over the 5 days, we spend time exploring the bush on foot, in a safari vehicle and by boat, ensuring the best all-around African experience possible.
This is a “glamping” safari, so we’re staying in modified tents, but it’s nothing like backwoods camping. Comfortable facilities, cosy beds, hot showers, flushing toilets and fully catered meals by a professional chef guarantee a more than comfortable, yet close-to-nature experience, perfect for full African nature immersion. Our focus will be animal encounters that put you in the best position possible for spectacular photography opportunities. Hunting Lions, foraging Elephants and large herds of Buffalo all add to the experience.
Day o1: Arrival & Safari Drive:
Collection will be arranged beforehand in the Johannesburg area. From Johannesburg, we’ll travel by road for about 2-hours to Dinokeng Game Reserve, where we’ll check in at the lodge around 14:00. Our first Safari activity will be a Safari Drive that afternoon, traversing the 50 000 acres (20 000 hectares) Game Reserve, as we search for wildlife sightings to start pointing our cameras at.
The Safari Drive continues into the early evening hours, after which we’ll head back to camp for drinks around the fire and a 4-star dinner experience under the stars.
Day 02 – Morning Walking Safari & Afternoon Safari Drive:
We’ll wake up bright and early to start the day with a guided Safari Walk, hoping to encounter any large mammals on foot. Whether we approach White Rhino sleeping under a tree, or a bull Elephant feeding around the river, this will be an experience like you’ve never had before. You walk with professionally qualified guides that will ensure your safety and an overall breathtaking experience.
Approaching the Big 5 on foot is a very humbling experience and getting close enough to take photos of them on foot gets all the senses heightened and tuned into your surroundings. On our Safari Trails, we get to focus on so much more than the large mammals. From animal tracks and signs to smaller insects and reptiles to plants and their medicinal uses, exploring the African wilderness on foot engages all the senses and sparks a deeper passion for our natural surroundings.
The Safari Walks are conducted at an easy-going comfortable pace and don’t require any serious level of fitness. If you can climb a flight of stairs, you can fully enjoy a Safari Trail experience.
Day 03 – Morning Safari Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise:
We’ll focus on finding wildlife from the vehicle, as we can approach them much closer and ensure the best photography opportunities possible. After our morning drive and a break during the heat of the day, we head out to the river, to experience Africa by boat. The birdlife around the river is abundant and wildlife plentiful. We’ll enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the horizon, and leave for camp once it’s dark, looking for predators in the night.
Day 04 – Morning Walking Safari & Afternoon Safari Drive:
On our final full day in the reserve, we’ll focus on finding wildlife we may have missed up until this point. First spending some time in the bush on foot again, tracking, trailing and finding whatever the bush has to offer. Then once it cools down in the afternoon, we settle in for an afternoon safari drive, approaching wildlife closely for those perfect wildlife shots.
Day 05 – Morning Safari Drive & Departure:
This is our final morning to clean up any possible animals we may have missed up until this point. Once our morning safari is over, we’ll have breakfast, pack up and head out of the reserve to drive back to Johannesburg, bringing the best wildlife photo safari near Johannesburg to an end. We’ll drop you off at pre-arranged hotels/resorts within the greater Johannesburg area.
